Exports
The Exports sector is only reported as an end-user sector. “Exports” in this sense does not mean the emissions embedded in all the UK’s exports – emissions here only relate to some very specific activities.
Some fuels which are produced within the UK - at refineries for example - are exported, meaning that the end-use activity in this case occurs outside the UK. As overall emissions by end-user need to be equal to emissions by source, an additional Exports sector therefore needs to be included, so as to re-allocate emissions which occur within the UK but for which there is no end-use in the UK.
This sector was responsible for just under 2% of UK greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. Since 2010, emissions from this sector have been gradually decreasing, as the energy supply sector has become more efficient.
