About me

Hi. I’m John Mackintosh, Founder of GreenGoals.
From my own experience, working in the private sector as well as in both central and local government, I could see the challenges faced by organisations in addressing the climate crisis, and the need for better, simpler information for decision makers and those tasked with meeting environmental targets. I established GreenGoals in 2022 to bring together my knowledge of the national and local context with an understanding of performance management. My aim is to simplify the picture for decision makers, so that the right decisions can be made and the right actions put in place. My career has focused on the use of evidence to inform policy and decisions, and to improve performance. I spent five years at what was the Department of Energy and Climate Change as the lead for all UK greenhouse gas emissions reporting – from the data management to the publication of UK National Statistics, and the submission of reports in order to meet international and domestic reporting obligations. That also included work on setting the UK’s carbon budgets. I also worked for a number of years at the Strategic Rail Authority, including five years leading on the analysis of rail performance on behalf of the Department for Transport. That involved developing tools and processes to monitor and report operational performance, which resulted in improved performance across the rail network. More recently I have worked in waste management, supporting Surrey Environment Partnership as they work towards their recycling targets. My background provides a unique combination of knowledge and experience, gained over many years. That combines an understanding of the public, private and third sectors with knowledge of environmental monitoring and reporting, alongside a wealth of experience in performance management.
